Ensuring study success in times of crisis (2022)

Building on long-standing partnerships with Ukrainian partner universities as well as on measures already established due to the crisis situation (HSWT Ukrainian Digital School), HSWT has offered Ukrainian students and lecturers comprehensive online teaching and support services.
The project focused on three measures:
1. teaching opportunities for Ukrainian students from agricultural universities in the amount of 5-30 EC across all faculties of the HSWT. 170 Ukrainian students, who were enrolled at their home universities, were enrolled at HSWT as exchange students in different Bachelor's and Master's programs for the winter semester 2022/2023. As planned, the 170 Ukrainian exchange students received an online scholarship of 200€/month for the months of September to December 2022. The vast majority of the foreign transfers were completed relatively smoothly. Less than 5% experienced problems with the transfers. The costs for the foreign transfers were covered by the Free State of Bavaria. All of the sponsored persons passed examinations.
2. further training of Ukrainian lecturers. The training of Ukrainian lecturers consisted of two parts. The first part consisted of 6 days of teaching modules in the field of didactics, student-centered teaching and modern online teaching.
In the second part, a 2-day online summer school was held with the lecturers and Ukrainian students on the topic of "online teaching in times of crisis - challenges and opportunities". Certificates were created for the training, which represent the number of hours of participation and are recognized by all partner universities as international continuing education.
3. 2 research fellowships for scientists from Ukrainian partner universities were awarded from June-December. One of them to a scientist from NUBiP, one to a scientist from SNAU.

Project description
The Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) has therefore set itself the goal of contributing to the knowledge society in Africa, together with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in connection with the project "Green Innovation Centers in the Agro-Food Sector" (GIAE) and the special initiative "One World without Hunger". The "Training Pact with Africa" (AmA) is funded within the framework of the GIAE.
This contribution serves as a nucleus for a stable and functioning society and at the same time as a basis for a successful business location. As a result, new jobs can be created, smallholder farms can be supported in sustainably increasing production and income, and value creation can be shifted to rural areas. HSWT is characterized by comprehensive practice-oriented teaching and research in the field of life sciences and technologies according to the guiding principle "Applied Sciences for Life". With its Weihenstephan and Triesdorf campuses, the university offers one of the most modern agricultural education and training centers nationally and internationally. The HSWT is to be regarded as a successful example of a modern and goal-oriented agricultural education with a scientific level..
Objective and approach
In terms of content and organization, the "Training Pact with Africa" is located under the umbrella of the "HSWT International School". The five pillars shown in Figure 1 form the foundation of the training pact. The illustration shows the three core measures partnerships, trainings as well as international master programs, which are realized within the framework of the first funding phase and the two extensions in the area of international bachelor programs and further education, which are implemented during the second funding phase. The HSWT International School digital forms a cross-sectional task across all areas. In addition to the exchange of experiences and ideas with the partner universities/institutions, the focus is also on networking among the partners themselves.

Background / initial situation
During the launch event of the Training Pact with Africa on May 20, 2019, Federal Minister Dr. Gerd Müller announced the Technology and Application Pact (TAP) in cooperation with HSWT. While the Training Pact with Africa aims to create the broader basis for application-oriented, practical and academic training, the Technology and Application Pact aims to provide practical and concrete application support on the ground. This addresses the problem of academic training that is not very practice-oriented and a largely lacking transfer of knowledge into agricultural practice. With a digital launch event on August 18, 2020, the HSWT together with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) gave the starting signal for the project "Technology and Application Pact" with Africa.
Project description
The Technology and Applications Pact focuses on the interface between demand and supply for innovations to add value to African agriculture, particularly smallholder agriculture. Within this framework
1. identify promising project ideas, support their implementation and evaluate them
2. and structures between universities, as well as, if possible, with industrial enterprises and other institutions, will be promoted.
Both approaches are intended to promote application-oriented training and knowledge transfer for the implementation of innovations in the sense of capacity development. The fields of work cover the entire value chain from innovative cultivation methods and locally adapted seeds to adapted mechanization, the linking of education and training with innovations, to improved post-harvest protection, storage and subsequent processing on site. This goes hand in hand with the creation of new jobs; in addition, smallholder farms are supported in sustainably increasing production and income, and value creation is shifted to rural Africa. The TAP and its planned measures are fundamentally aligned with the thematic priorities and selected value chains of the GIAE country packages
Objective
The Technology and Application Pact aims at establishing and anchoring application-oriented teaching including its transfer into practice. Within this framework, partner universities (with teaching companies) are supported in the conception, establishment and implementation of practice and innovation-oriented teaching according to the HSWT model. The main objective of the activities of the Application and Technology Pact is the further development of the African partner universities towards a stronger demand and practice orientation, as it has been practiced at the HSWT for almost 50 years. The partner universities in Africa currently include:

1. Supporting the formation of structures for the implementation of technology and application ideas,
2. the selection and implementation of technology and application ideas, and
3. expanding application-oriented teaching and increasing the implementation reach of the technology and application pact.

Abstract
Boosting Agricultural Studies in Sub-Sahara Africa According to numerous authors, agriculture and farming are a major source of livelihood in the countries of Sub Saharan Africa (SSA), contributing between 15 % and 40 % of the gross domestic product, providing livelihood for over 70% of SSA population through family farming and employing at least 34% of the active workforce with its potential heavily underexploited. One of the reasons are poor connections between tertiary education as the knowledge base and immediate agricultural producers (farms). Furthermore, according to various authors, gender is an important factor in understanding every aspect of agricultural and rural development in SSA. Women are essential to agricultural production but they lack adequate access to land and inputs, they tend to be excluded from decision-making and have less chances of accessing tertiary education, along with so many poverty-stricken individuals coming from remote areas. BASIS addresses the aforementioned issues by introducing interventions in higher education curricula towards a more field-based and competence-oriented knowledge and skills highly valued at the labour market. This will establish lasting and systemic exchange between the tertiary education and smallholder farmers in SSA. Likewise, BASIS introduces mechanisms and measures to increase access to tertiary education for women and poverty-stricken individuals from remote areas, and provide them with more equitable chances of employment and growth. Project outcomes will create opportunities for further innovation and modernization of higher education and agricultural production in SSA, equipping higher education institutions, their staff and students with different social and economic background, as well as smallholders in remote rural areas with essential mechanisms for sustainable advancement and growth.

Abstract
Although many people think of agriculture as low tech and innovation field, those involved in agricultural education or industry know that it’s actually quite the opposite – year on year new solutions and efforts are being made towards bridging the gap between the real life and classroom in agricultural field that change the life of students, farmers and entrepreneurs across the world. More and more farmers are turning to data science to make informed decisions using precision technologies. However, this kind of initiatives are much less (if any) observed in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) that severely lags behind in their development despite the fact that most people are engaged in small farming as primary economic activity. In addressing this imbalance, CHAIN steps up the agricultural innovation and collaboration potential in SSA targeting engagement of teaching and non-teaching university staff, agricultural students, farmers and industry representatives. It introduces a more holistic and human-centred approach to agricultural education, training and innovation in the region through: developing a master program in Food Value Chain (FVC) at beneficiary HEIs; building teacher capacity at beneficiary HEIs to use promote learning methods and use teaching methodology prone to entrepreneurial thinking and innovation, with emphasis on e-learning and digital tools; and establishing Collaborative Holistic Agriculture Innovation Nests offering support to innovation initiatives of students, farmers, and entrepreneurs. While on immediate impact level the project brings modernized curricula prone to innovation and increased employability of students, CHAIN in the long run fosters efforts around food safety and security in targeted African countries and communities, by developing and promoting “careers of the future,” in the agricultural sector. It thus provides impetus to tackling some of the core global developmental issues including production of more food with less inputs.

Objective
AGRISAT's main goal is to enable SMART agriculture that contributes to a more sustainable environment while combating climate change in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.
This is to be achieved with the following measures:

Research Initiative "Agriculture and Nutrition in International Competition" at the Faculty of Agriculture of the HSWT
The competence team initiates joint thematic research and creation of data collections with the IMA partner universities, which can then be used by all participating partners on an equal basis.
Goal:
Establishment of a data collection on basic agricultural data for research and teaching with a special focus on production economics issues in partner countries.
Approach:
- To compile regional data collections on production processes of the individual locations/regions
- To carry out economic comparisons between production methods at different locations with analyses of weak points
- To present the economic framework conditions of the agricultural sector in the partner countries.
- To carry out SWOT and -cost-benefit- analyses in association or individually
- Publication, preparation and application of the research results of the competence team
